BRIAN BUFFEY FOR THE TORONTO STAR
The North York Rangers Minor Atom AAA team is team of the week for their incredible spirit, and commitment as well as the attitude of their coach.
This team hasn't won a game on the ice and has the most goals against –157 – in the GTHL but don't whine about it.
Opposition coaches who worry about their standings at the end of the season have run up scores against this team and last Friday this club lost 24-0 to Toronto Marlies but no tears were shed by the nine-year-olds in the dressing room. Thanks to the attitude of coach Nick Rowe.
Sure the goalies must be shell-shocked but reverse the usual thinking and understand what really happened on the ice.
Goaltender Ewen Hutton stood up to 108 shots in Marlies' encounter and made an incredible 84 saves. In any other story it would read "HUTTON STOPS 84"
And it hasn't been any easier for alternate Colin Sinclair who faced more than 70 shots and stopped 56 in an earlier 14-0 romp by another team.
"Unless someone tells them, no one knows the score," insists Rowe of his team of nine-year-olds. "I don't tell them the score, I only focus on what they have done well and what they need to work on."
The team is lucky. Rowe is a trained professional. He works with teachers who coach in the Toronto District Secondary School Athletic Association and helps with the elementary school as well. He makes sure kids in the school system are not only part of a team but actually get to play in games.
"All our parents and players come to practices twice a week and to every game," Rowe said of their dedication." The parents have been great. They take this (season) as a chance to learn to play at the highest level and how hard they have to work."
"We will win one yet," he says.
General Manager Claude Desjardin is pleased with the team and Rowe.
Desjardin said only one parent has left the club and would be lying if he said all the parents were extremely happy but "I am totally impressed with what the coach has done with this team. We started late."
