Hockey Canada has recently issued a memo regarding the North American Prospects Showcase (NAPS) operating out of Rochester, New York. While this tournament is not taking place until May and June of 2008, they promote themselves as "one of the most recognized and prestigious spring/summer events in North America for the elite hockey player" for all age groups from players born in 1993—1998.

Apparently, this particular tournament is not sanctioned by USA Hockey and as a result no teams who are members under the Hockey Canada umbrella can be sanctioned to participate.

While there is no rule prohibiting hockey players or independent spring/summer teams from participating in non-sanctioned events, parents should be reminded that Hockey Canada Accident & Liability Insurance does not cover player participation in these types of programs. If you have any doubts about insurance coverage in non-sanctioned competitions, you should check to see what if any insurance coverage is provided for the players. Remember, accident is just a word until you have one!
